Robert Freling, Executive Director, Solar Electric Light Fund

Just when things were beginning to look a little grim, Robert Freling arrived on the scene from SELF, the Solar Electric Light Fund. He is working on electricity as the groundwork for all of the rest of the fundamental development goals. Along with Robert and SELF, the Pop!Tech conference has taken steps to be, not just carbon neutral, but carbon negative. Every bit of carbon dioxide emitted into the air from Pop!Tech participants and their travel has been offset by Pop!Tech and SELF's rural development initiatives. We have left things just a little bit better, maybe even enough to use Kevin Kelly's idea and say that our solution was 1% better than our problem.

Robert Freling has been responsible for developing and coordinating solar rural electrification programs for SELF, the Solar Electric Light Fund, in Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, India, Solomon Islands, Bhutan, Tanzania, Nigeria, Benin, and Rwanda.

In 1998, SELF received the Green Cross Millennium Award from Global Green USA and Mikhail Gorbachev in recognition of the work that it has done in bringing solar light and power to rural and remote villages around the world that lie beyond the reach of an electric grid.

Robert received a BA in Russian studies from Yale University and an MA in communications management from the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Southern California. He is fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, and Indonesian.
